Content Management Systems
If you’re planning to build a website, one of the first things you’ll need to do is choose a content management system (CMS). A CMS is a platform that helps you create and manage your website’s content. In this section, we’ll give you an overview of some of the most popular CMS options.
WordPress
WordPress is a free and open-source CMS that is both beginners- and developer-friendly. Although there are several add-ons available for WordPress, the basic installation does not include many built-in functions, so you’ll need to use a plug-in for most of the special features you want to implement.
Textpattern
Textpattern is a powerful open-source CMS with many advanced features. It also has an active development community, so if you run into problems or have questions about customizations, you’re likely to find answers online.
Joomla!
Joomla! is another popular option. Like Textpattern, it’s an open-source CMS with an established base of users and an active development community. Also like Textpattern, it requires a host of plug-ins to create a full site with all the bells and whistles you might want.
Joomla! is particularly good for sites that need to frequently update content, such as newspapers, magazines, and blogs.WordPress has by far the largest market share among open source CMSs, but this doesn’t mean there isn’t room for other options. The CMS that’s best for your project depends on what you plan to do with it, who will be working on it and how much time they have to devote. If you’re just getting started with a project, selecting one of the major CMSs and investing some time learning how to use it will save you headaches down the road.
Choosing a Theme
One of the most important aspects of creating a website is choosing an appropriate theme. A theme sets the overall tone and style for your website and can make a big difference in terms of how user-friendly and visually appealing your site is.
