Pavel Cucka, Winner of the CGTantra Matte Painting Challenge tells his how the splendid Matte painting was created. When I first discovered that CGTantra was organizing a matte painting challenge, I was glad that someone was again going to encourage aspiring matte painters to create wonderful images. And after I saw the January’s month theme “The Lost World” I was thrilled to take part myself. It was just a quick practice and fun project for me. I started thinking about the concept a little bit and I pictured a lost temple in a jungle - lush vegetation, mysterious atmosphere and waterfalls. Needless to say this concept was against the rules as I discovered later. But anyway, that’s how the idea took off. I put together a quick color, composition and shape study – commonly referred to as sketch.
